Secrets of MARC for Tech Services
Ready to go beyond the basics? Designed for technical services staff, this session connects the historical logic of the card catalog to modern MARC structure, pulls back the curtain on the hidden power of the fixed field, and examines how transcription fidelity in key fields determines whether records match, merge, or fragment across systems.
Participants will dig into the relationship between the MARC record and what the public catalog actually displays, work through real-world display and indexing scenarios, and walk away with a sharper understanding of how the data decisions they make at the cataloging workstation (is it a match?) ripple forward into discovery — and why that matters more than ever.
